Keep hydrated
Keep normally hydrated before your appointment. Follow any medical advice you have been given about how much to drink, including any fluid restriction.
Understand the procedure
Also known as colonic irrigation or a colonic, this is a procedure that introduces water into the large bowel through the rectum to flush out its contents.
A closer look
The colon is part of your large intestine. It absorbs water and helps form and move stool towards the rectum. Colonic hydrotherapy introduces water into the colon to flush out bowel contents.
The illustration shows the ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid colon, together with the rectum and nearby structures. It also labels several bowel conditions.
Before booking, read the treatment suitability guidance and discuss your medical history with Nat.
Nat has 13 years’ experience and trained at the AUK Colonic Association in Grantham. You can speak to her before booking to discuss the procedure, your questions and suitability.
The drawing includes adhesions, diverticula and diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, polyps and cancer. It is an educational illustration, not a diagnostic guide or a list of conditions treated by colonic hydrotherapy.
Before you arrive
Keep normally hydrated before your appointment. Follow any medical advice you have been given about how much to drink, including any fluid restriction.
Eat lightly in the two hours before your appointment and avoid a heavy meal. Ask Nat if you have any questions about preparing for your visit.
An electrolyte drink is not a requirement. If you’re considering one, ask a pharmacist or your clinician whether it suits you, especially if you take medication or have advice to limit fluids or salts.
What to expect
Discuss your health, medication and any bowel symptoms with Nat. Ask about the equipment, hygiene, possible risks and whether the procedure is appropriate for you. An appointment lasts approximately 75 minutes, including preparation and aftercare.
Warm water is introduced through the rectum using a slow, controlled flow. Nat describes the flow as gentle, with some clients barely noticing the water. Sensations vary: you may feel fullness, bloating or cramps. Tell Nat straight away if you feel pain or unwell.
Nat will discuss aftercare and how to get in touch with questions. Ask what symptoms to expect and when to seek medical help. Follow-up support is available after your visit.
Your comfort & care
Safety starts with checking whether treatment is suitable for you. Nat will discuss your health and medication, explain the procedure and answer your questions before you decide to go ahead.
Nat uses a slow flow of warm water and talks with you about how you’re feeling throughout the appointment. Some clients notice very little sensation from the water; others feel fullness or cramping.
Your comfort matters throughout. Let Nat know straight away if anything feels painful or uncomfortable, so she can respond and discuss what happens next.
The clinic’s machine uses double-filtered, UV-treated water. All speculums are disposable and are used for one appointment only.
You’re welcome to ask Nat to explain the machine, water treatment and hygiene arrangements before your visit.
Tell Nat about medical conditions, medication, pregnancy, recent surgery or changes in your bowel symptoms. Some conditions mean treatment should not go ahead.

This is the colonic hydrotherapy machine at Huddersfield Colonics. The water passes through double filtration and UV treatment, and disposable speculums are used for each appointment.
If you’d like to understand how it works, Nat can talk you through the controls, water flow and hygiene arrangements before your treatment.
Ask Nat about your appointmentIt’s natural to want reassurance before trying something new. Nat welcomes your questions and will talk through suitability, the procedure and aftercare with you, so you can make a decision you feel comfortable with.
Part of that conversation is understanding the possible complications: dehydration, changes in the body’s salt balance, infection, or injury to the rectum or bowel, including a tear called perforation. Careful screening, hygiene and controlled flow are important precautions, although they cannot remove every risk.
You can contact Nat with questions about your appointment or aftercare. If you develop severe or worsening abdominal pain, significant bleeding, fever, or feel seriously unwell after treatment, please seek urgent medical attention.
